Running Lifestyle

Aug 05, 2010 in Outdoors, Photography Assignment, advertising

Back in June we did a job for Injinji. It’s catalog season and they made it happen. Their new line of toe socks for next year is ready and they left prepared for the outdoor retailer convention in Salt Lake City.

Sun rising through the forest

Sunrise through the trees

Our first half of the shoot was a 2 hour drive first thing in the morning. The shoot relied primarily on available light so timing was of the essence. I was on the road by 330am after a pit stop at 7-11. I don’t operate well without coffee. We arrived and it was still dark. But just barely. The sky began to outline the trees and the stars began to fade. It was an amazing sight to watch the sky light up. I vowed to come back out another morning and capture it, as soon as things calm down around here.

The art director and models arrived on set as the sun rose and we got started. The first model jumped right into her role and we were off and running, pun intended. The sun raking across the fields of grass was fantastic. I only wish I could have slowed the rising sun a little more. I haven’t found an app for that yet but I’m still looking.

It was an eventful morning and I could have gone on for days. But as the sun got too high and the lighting got bad, we took a break for the day. Late in the afternoon we met back up again a little closer to town. These were more forest like images than open ground. After another 4 hours of shooting it was the end of the day and the end of the shoot. Thank you to everyone on the crew and everyone else that helped make it possible. Watch for Injinji’s new product line. Especially if you’re an athlete of any kind.

March Wedding

Jul 23, 2010 in Photography Assignment, engagement/wedding

I love a good wedding. The bride and groom have their own ideas of what they want in a wedding. Our wedding is the big party that we all want to have, but can’t justify it otherwise. For some it is on an island in the north west in the forest with tie dye and crisp clean air. For others its in a grand church with a horse driven carriage and amazing catering. Sometimes it’s just in a place that they call home with friends and family feeling comfortable in a familiar environment. All of these are great. It is demeanor of the guests, parents and of course, bride & groom. This wedding was fantastic. Here you go.

Gift Machine in the forest

May 03, 2010 in Music, Photography Assignment

Andrea and Dave are the band Gift Machine. I first had a chance to photograph this band’s show at the Che Cafe last year. It’s a mellow, hippie sounding tune with a lot of feeling behind the sounds. They asked me to do some photos for their website. I happily agreed. It was a long trip through the windy roads of Ramona. You know it’s a good trip when you have no idea how to get there again. As far as I’m concerned the place only existed for this day. When we first arrived stray cows watched us pull up. In the forest. With Dave’s steady approach they scattered like pigeons. We got there in perfect timing. The sun had just crested the hill in the west and the forest had a nice ubiquitous glow to it. Exactly what I was looking for. I setup one light in front for fill and a rim light to rake the edges. Perfect and simple setup. After about an hour of shooting we called it a day. It was cold and the air was getting damp. It took almost 2 hours to get there and we only shot for less than an hour. But it was well worth it. Rockin.

It was a big rave. The World Beat Center expected over 1000 people to show up and I would not be surprised if they did. Shark Attack headlined the evening with Turbo Teen opening. The energy in the crowd was amazing. I was hired by an undisclosed production company to photograph the event. Our client was Shark Attack. Although that was my sole purpose in taking pictures that night, I was asked to take many more. Many of the patrons asked for photographs of themselves at the event.
