Band Promotion

Feb 01, 2010 in Music, Photography Assignment

I photographed the band Silence Betrayed last year for their promotions. Mike found this abandoned dairy farm in the middle of Pala. It was pretty rad. I will definitiely be going out there again for more. These photos were used as backgrounds to their myspace and headers to the silence betrayed website as well as many other places in their promotion. If you make it out to one of their shows you’ll see my photos all over the merchandise table. One year after my first music show I am still going strong so I know it’s fun for me.

Brick By Brick Show – Mondays Alibi

Jan 31, 2010 in Music, Photography Assignment

A few Fridays ago was another show at the Brick By Brick. It was the biggest show I’ve been to in a while. It was so packed that I was concerned for my gear for part of the night. Mondays Alibi kicked off the show with their set. Kind of a punk, Blink 182 sort of style. It was a good opening act. It’s enough to keep you wanting more.

I took a break from the metal bands that I have been photographing lately and changed genre’s a little bit. Jackson Price is a solo guitarist in San Diego. He had a show at Voyeur on Friday with Marta Blalock. It was nice not having earplugs. Together they played a good mellow show. Jackson is a really good acoustic guitar player. He does shows all over San Diego. Marta is a violin player and violin teacher. Voyeur is a bar/restaurant/club with an different kind of decor. Skulls on the wall and ghosts in pictures. The wall on the stage is all LED lights. They are all black plastic which reflected my flashes. This creates a different kind of separation between Jackson and Marta and the background. Cool stuff.

Brick By Brick Show – Silence Betrayed

Jan 19, 2010 in Music, Photography Assignment

My good friends Silence Betrayed had a show with Adema recently. No one went to the hospital but it was good enough that I am actually surprised. Brick By Brick lucked out that night.

Bands at Hogue Barmichaels

Dec 09, 2009 in Music, Photography Assignment, editorial

Another great show. Music photography is so fun because anything goes and everyone is drunk happy and in a good mood. This show was at Hogue Barmichaels in Newport Beach. I met with Silence Betrayed in Oceanside and we all drove up together. I have a love hate relationship with GPS. On one side you never get lost but on the other side it never takes toll roads into account and it doesn’t work well in some rural areas. I guess the satellites just don’t fly over empty land. After a bit of confusion we finally arrived at Hogue Barmichaels. I didn’t know what to expect when we got there. It was an all ages show which is more awkward than I remember. Here I am having a few beers in a dark bar and there are children there not old enough to drive. With their parents.

When we walked in though it was totally different. A band was already on stage and they were killin it. As I turn the corner not one of the 5 band members is out of high school. Unfortunately I did not have time to setup my camera in time to snap some shots of them but the rest of the night made up for it. Sunday Girl played first. The smoke began to pour out and it was on. I got my lights setup, broke out my new lens (24mm-105mm) and started shooting. Oh how sweet it is. I have been to a few of their shows over the last year (wow has it been that long already?) and it’s awesome every time. Next up was Abita. This was my first time hearing them. Definitely a must see. Check them out on Myspace. My good friends Silence Betrayed followed. Good show. Damn good show. Finally Deliverance closed the night. This is the first time I had heard Deliverance. Apparently they just changed their name to No TV which in my opinion is a name that needs some work. But who knows, maybe they have a new face that will explain that title. I assume that they changed their name because there is a christian “metal” band with the same name. That’s like having a non-alcoholic beer or a diet coke at Jack-in-the-Box. It’s counter intuitive on so many levels. So maybe that’s why they changed their name. Anyways name or not, Deliverance NO TV rocked it. But don’t take my word for it. Check them out for yourself.

Jesters Fate at The Onyx in San Diego

Dec 06, 2009 in Music, Photography Assignment, editorial

Band photography is such a fun thing to photograph. I had the chance to photograph Jesters Fate. They are a cover band based out of Ramona. Rockin. It was my first time taking pictures at The Onyx Room. This is an interesting venue. Walking down the stairs it looks like a log cabin in the woods. Then they took out the animal heads and put a backlight on the marble. Then the back room where the stage was at is black and really dark. Totally the opposite. The Onyx room is a rad place.
